Yes, it's convenient to do in-place upgrades but you have to calculate
the risk. Also in-place too many generation might result in unsolvable
dependencies (or years of leftovers :-)); e.g., you have an old package
you need that depends on old python 2.4 while the new system supports
2.6. Unless you have a good way for several versions of python (or
other packages) to co-exist. Do you still do in-place upgrade when the
supported filesystem gets changed (and not as easy as going from ext2 to
