The URL for the wireless captive portal ends in a .local address.
Avahi (zero-configuration networking) prevents DNS lookups to this
.local address. The quick fix on the client end is to stop the Avahi
service:

sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon stop

Or you can prevent the service from starting if you aren't using it
(most people shouldn't need it).

this means network drivers are functioning. no need to swap wifi cards.

I think this might be where the error is - what url is it redirecting you
to?

might be some problem with the DNS server not being available before
logging in.

try pinging the server that url is at. does it give an error message?

could you give us the url of the page you are trying to see?
or is it viewable from a local network only?

I'm not a regular Ubuntu user, but do follow the antics on the
alt.os.linux ubuntu newsgroup, and from what I can gather the Network
Manager in Intrepid is "broken" in some respects. There are
fixes/workarounds I'm sure, but I couldn't tell you what they are
offhand. You might see if you can find a reference to your difficulties
there, or post there yourself. For some odd reason, that newsgroup isn't
archived by Google, so doing a search via Google Groups isn't possible.

The eeepc's are just my personal laptops the one being used by the student is acer forget model but pretty standard specs. the browser makes no diffrence i have opera 9 and opera 10 and a few others on my eee's just to check how pages are rendered diffrently.

 Firefox versions i think is 3.07 whatever a clean fully updated intrepid gives you (its 3.07 on my eeebuntu on eeepc900A) dont have access to his right now so not positive. no addon's other than default he has not discovered extensions yet.

ok now what happens is you click on network manager and connect to ivy tech wireless it connects and shows your connected. as experiment i pinged the router i even went to the ip of the webserver that is hosting the login and it came up with the default webpage for a redhat enterprise webserver.(which is problem in and of itself i think but beside the point) all fine pinged www.yahoo.com no luck. Then you bring up firefox and it brings up page says convas or something like that with spining icon saying its redirecting you to login page which never happens it comes up with error page and try again.

live ubuntu intrepid cd will do same thing but live hardy cd login is fine.
Gos which is hardy based works fine  mint 5 hardy based works fine.
no firewall set either i checked.

it's only intrepid that is haveing the problem updated hardy based distro's work fine no problems. I am comeing to the conclusion there are major problems with networking in intrepid my guess would be driver issues. so to eliminate that i changed his wifi card from a bcm4311 based card to a intel one same problem. Which leads me back to the networking implimentation in intrepid.

I'm neither an Eee owner nor an Ubuntu (or Mint) user, but I'll do what
I can.

First, I presume you're talking about using Firefox to display a
specific webpage to login to the wi-fi. Is that correct? If not, what
browser and version are you using, and what exactly is the error you are
getting? Do you get a blank page? A warning from the access point? A
warning from the browser saying the page isn't there? When you go to the
portal page and it doesn't display, can you do "View Source" and see the
HTML source for the portal page?

Also, are there any add-ons that could be getting in the way? NoScript
breaks pages frequently and requires you to manually whitelist pages.
Are you using the same version of Firefox through all these tests? It's
possible the portal refuses to work with "unsupported" browsers (I think
the concept of "supported browsers" is total BS, but that's a rant for
another time).
