Uh oh, the cat is out of the bag. Yes, we've been starting to use it
at Suso to experiment with the concept of being able to keep a system
going perpetually without having to "upgrade" via the normal methods
(reboot and run install CD). We were on a Redhat/Fedora track before,
but handling the upgrades every 2 or 3 years was annoying. For those
that don't understand why this is a problem, hours of downtime is
unacceptable for most web hosting providers. So you usually end up
migrating to another physical host.
But for other reasons besides the drama of the Gentoo community, I've
decided that we're going to move away from it and towards Debian or
Ubuntu server. Mainly because I'm tired of compiling stuff, but also
because compiling upgrades on a production server isn't a good thing.
Virtualization with things like Xen is already making the upgrade game
easier for us to manage though so its not such an issue anymore.
