Re: [BLUG] insight broadband vs. flets

Well, you certainly gave me pause (ignorance, me?! never!), so I
researched the options and I can certainly get DSL service from other
people...but they all also require that I have phone service through
Verizon, so even if they were slightly cheaper (which they aren't)
it's not worth breaking my one-year agreement with Verizon to make the
switch, I'll still be paying Verizon the bulk of my bill.

Interesting tangent (to me): I was speaking with my dad last
night/this morning and he said the Venezuelan government finally
de-privatized CANTV, the Venezuelan telco. They've been speaking about
this for a while, and it looks like they finally went through with it.
During the last administration in the 90s CANTV, which was
historically always a State company, was taken public which ironically
enough meant that the public company had its shares sold to private
entities, mostly U.S. telecom firms.

I was curious about the economics of such a decision so I asked "So,
what did they do? Just take the company back and tell the gringos to
go home or did they buy back all the shares that were sold during the
last administration?", and he said "Yeah, the government bought back
all the shares, mostly from, oh, what's that company's name...oh,
yeah, Verizon."
