I remember those days. When I interviewed for my job at Progeny, I
(truthfully) told Ian Murdock how much I liked dselect since it allowed
me fine grained control over what was on my system.

Yeah, it's good to stay aware of these things. If you're not watching
it's easy to make a mistake. For example, you may have noticed I
accidentally just reposted the same link. Oh well...

I would start with the question how recent are they? I know that I have seen the guides before in the past. Just curious if they are keeping it updated

cheers

There are image repositories of CC-licensed content, but not of xcf or svg files. Most content is in either lightly compressed jpg or png, especially if it's fairly detailed. Svg is getting more popular though, and I've seen vector image sites that host svg files along with (huge) png renderings of said svg files. I have also seen wallpaper and art websites that host both the finished image and the various components that went into it. I don't think xcf will get that big, but we'll see. Svg has the advantage of being a web standard.

OpenRaster is a new raster image format standard that the freedesktop.org people are working on that should work across gimp, krita, photoshop, etc. I expect it to displace xcf like OpenDocument displaced the OpenOffice and Koffice document formats.

Yes, take a look at the Open Clip Art Library (http://www.openclipart.org/)
Almost all the images are in SVG format and you can even search the library
from within Inkscape, one of the best vector graphics editor out there.

Those are some neat sites. Along slightly similar lines, has anyone
ever come across a central repository like that of explicitly
openly-shared images in an editable format, for example in GIMP's .xcf
format or in .svg? It could be useful if someone wanted to use a
picture for a project but modify it somewhat. For example if you knew
you wanted to draw something with a "global community" theme you could
start with someone else's drawing of the Earth, remove the parts you
don't like, and build on top of it.

[BLUG] US government publishes guide to securing Redhat EL5

Thought some of you may find this helpful. A 170 page PDF about configuring Red Hat. They also have guides for for OS X, Solaris, and even Windows.

Insert movie times and more without leaving Hotmail®. See how.

That is a nice paraphrase of the General Welfare Clause,
yes.

Item: having to seek created a lot of hardship; and it
wasn't until ca. 1900 that Ainsworth Rand Spofford offered to
accept all deposits for LC. (Before that, they went to all sorts
of places, most of which didn't want them.)

The DMCA is an abomination imaginable only to
Congressvermin and the bloated plutocrats who buy them.

You might want to read what the Copyright Office has to
say about works made for hire.

> Most code doesn't end up packaged up and sold to anyone.

Of course not. The people/corporations that own it want
it to themselves, to use, not as a product to sell.

Hey guys I've got this other neat operating system that works really
swell! It can be installed along side linux too. It's called Winblows,
err, I mean Windows 98. Just boot up with dos, then use the dos version
of fdisk to make some windows partitions. Dont worry that it cant see
your linux partitions, it automagically steps around them (Hehehehaha
Mwuhaaahahawuhaha). Then format your new windows partitions and you are
ready to go. Just send $150 to me and I'll mail you a shiny new windows
cd... better yet send me your creditcard number('s). It's so nice and
pretty and easy to use, I'm sure you all will be using it instead of
linux in no time. And hey, there's nothing like a freshly rebooted
machine to brighten your day! Well I have to go now, someone named 'DoJ'
keeps sending me email... I keep telling them I'm not interested in what
they have to say, but they keep harassing me. Oh well... tata for now!

P.S. Check out this website I really like:

Bye!
