Wait, you said we were moving all of the servers to Win2003 Servers with
IIS. That way the customers can't tell if we are doing upgrades or just
down due to normal Windows Server reasons.

You know...even trying to be funny, that thought makes a chill go up my

Uh oh, the cat is out of the bag. Yes, we've been starting to use it
at Suso to experiment with the concept of being able to keep a system
going perpetually without having to "upgrade" via the normal methods
(reboot and run install CD). We were on a Redhat/Fedora track before,
but handling the upgrades every 2 or 3 years was annoying. For those
that don't understand why this is a problem, hours of downtime is
unacceptable for most web hosting providers. So you usually end up
migrating to another physical host.

But for other reasons besides the drama of the Gentoo community, I've
decided that we're going to move away from it and towards Debian or
Ubuntu server. Mainly because I'm tired of compiling stuff, but also
because compiling upgrades on a production server isn't a good thing.

Virtualization with things like Xen is already making the upgrade game
easier for us to manage though so its not such an issue anymore.

No idea. We use it at Suso, so I wanted to get to know it better. I
prefer to try the product without know what soap operas are going on
between developers. I watched some of that go on with FreeBSD in the
past and it just depressed me and took me away from learning the system.
A good sign that sometimes you need to socialize at the local pub and
not via IRC.

Course a look at history has shown that, in the BSD world atleast, a
difference of opinion can bring about some nice projects such as Theo
being booted from NetBSD and starting OpenBSD and Matt Dillon starting
Dragonfly BSD after not liking the roadmap for FreeBSD 5.

Thank you,

Re: [BLUG] Bragging rights

Congrats Scott!

I've not played with a true self-compiling distribution since... oh,
back in 1996 or so. (It was on an Yggdrasil 4 CD set.) I don't even
remember what that distribution was called anymore.

A year or so back I did a Linux-From-Scratch installation
<http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/>, which was fun. It isn't self-hosted,
though. It is hosted on another Linux system, first via cross-compile
techniques, then via chroot.

That was back after I became disgruntled with Debian, but before I found
Ubuntu. I actually decided to go with Linux From Scratch instead of
Gentoo at the time. I seem to remember part of the reasoning stemming
from bandwidth issues. (Due to versions of locally cached files it was
faster to go with LFS.)

Cheers,
Steven black

It is true. I'll need to dig up some URLs to show the drama involved. Will
follow-up with that.

The future for Gentoo may or may not go well. I do know that there's enough
people and groups using it for critical production purposes that some kind
of portage based system will survive though. It may not be called Gentoo,
but there's too many people invested at this point to let it go over
something as silly as peoples feelings.

Somebody at work was saying that there is some political stuff going
down in the Gentoo community that seems to be causing a sort of chasm or
rift. Is this true? What is the status here? How does the future of
Gentoo look?

Re: [BLUG] Nvidia driver and Twinview mode for dualhead displays

Cool. So you have full 3d acceleration then across all four of your
screens? What about video?

When are they going to start selling monitors without a seam on one
side. So you'd buy a right side and left side monitor pair. Even if
they could get it down to like a couple millimeters it would be great.

[BLUG] Bragging rights

Okay, this may not be a big deal to some of you, but I was pretty proud
of myself for it. I successfully installed Gentoo 2007.0 via a stage 3
minimal install. I have tried this a few times, but never ended up with
a usable machine afterwards. This time I had a few problems with the
dhcp client, but was able to fix it since I actually understood what I
was doing. My main complaint though is that vi is not included in the
default install or the install media, but nano is. Almost bad enough to
make me want to go back to emacs.

Now I love Ubuntu, and I know it has a place in the landscape of Linux
Distros, but sometimes it is nice to install a distro that makes you
think and learn about what you are doing. Now I won't pretend that I
understand everything that I did while following the handbook
instructions, but I understood enough to take care of a problem that I
did come across.

I have been running Ubuntu on my desktop since 5.04, but I still think
back to a Debian install I had years ago as my favorite since I had set
it up from scratch and poured quite a bit of time into getting to do
everything I wanted at the time. Damn, Automatix has spoiled me.

Yeah, my four-head xorg.conf (attached)has two "Device" Sections (one for
each two-output card, with twinview settings for the second output on each
card) and two "Screen" sections. Nvidia includes an explanation of every
nvidia-specific option in the proprietary driver package (on my systems,
this gets dropped into /usr/share/doc/nvidia-drivers).

Re: [BLUG] Nvidia driver and Twinview mode for dualhead displays

That's what I was wondering, if you could use twinview to combine more
than 2 monitors. Guess not. I wonder if you could have two sets of
twinview dualhead displays.

The 9 screens (actually 10 today because I brough in my laptop) don't
give me sun burn, but they do require a good chiropractor.

Re: [BLUG] Tux 500

That has never stopped them from taking an old story and "digging it"
just like it was new...the memory of the users on that site seems a bit
short.

See, its a cinderella type story. What is annoying is that tux500
isn't getting any coverage on a site that would energize the Linux
community into giving more money, like Slashdot. I actually wrote to
Rob Malda to ask why he wouldn't run the story and he said that it
didn't interest him. Sheesh.

[BLUG] Tux 500

Okay, I don't know if I would have thought of getting Tux on a 500 car,
but the Indy Star has an article.

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070509/BUSINESS/705090348

And it has a sidebar of "What is Linux" so it seems to be getting the
some positive mention in mainstream press.

Thank you,
Scott Blaydes
