Re: [BLUG] Gas & the 15th

Oh, was I not supposed to buy gas on May 15th, 1997? Damnit.

Interestingly enough, May 15th, 1997 was the day I started working at
Kiva Networking. So I probably did buy gas.

Cool I'll be putting gas in my car on the 15th and driving it to deliver a Linux box.  Back on topic, yay!

I don't think you are.

If everyone switched to riding bikes for N days/months from the 15th on.
Then *maybe* it would make some kind of difference. Not buying gas for one
day does not. It's simply not that kind of product. What you don't buy on
the 15th you will on the 16th. Additionally, consumers aren't buying gas
from the oil companies deciding the prices, they buy it from regular
schmoes who own gas stations and pay to put the name of some oil company on
their sign. Those people *pay for the gas in advance*. All we'll do is
screw some guy who owns a gas station by making him pay some employees
hourly wage that day while not bringing in money from selling gas. It
doesn't hurt the oil company, they've been paid already.

All economic tom-foolery aside, can we keep the list mostly about Linux?

Re: [BLUG] Gas & the 15th

Did that really make a difference in 1997? They may drop the price 35 cents for good will but it will just go back up after a few days.  After all, you're not really depriving them of business by not filling up on the 15, you're just delaying that business until the 16th when the gas companies will see a record number of people filling up their tanks.  Which means higher demand and justification for them raising the prices back up.  It doesn't seem to add up to anyone buying less gas, which is what is fundamentally required to hurt business.... or am I missing something?

As much as I enjoy urban legends, this one gets old fast because a lot
of the people I know go gung-ho for this and then are disappointed when
nothing actually happens. And then the next time they try it, they
can't figure out why it doesn't work.
