[BLUG] Poll to decide February Meeting

http://doodle.com/participation.html?pollId=8ktmcqadg7xisrdq

I assumed Monday through Thursday are options.

I'll let the poll run for a week or so and tally it up when I get home.
I am aware that picking a date with not enough lead time will make it
hard to schedule the room, and some options may become unavailable by
the time the poll is closed.

I'll be on vacation next week, but I'll have email and web access. If
need be, I can send someone else the poll admin link.

I probably should have made more noise earlier in the week. Oh well. As
I mentioned in another thread, we are on for 7:00 pm in the Library
tonight.

I reserved a projector and I'll have my laptop(s). I'll be going over
GPG for email and file encryption as well as signing, and I'll cover
some tools that make the process easier. I will also cover using GPG on
Windows.

I don't think my paranoid ramblings will take up the whole meeting, so
we can also talk about other things tangentially related. My laptops run
KDE 4.2, in case you want to play with a working installation of such. I
also want to talk about when February's meeting should be scheduled.

Re: [BLUG] reminder: meeting TONIGHT

Also, when you know the room number you can easily ask Library staff to
help point you to the room.

One big benefit of reserving the room a month in advance is that it
gets listed with the other "Library Events" and as such it becomes much
clearer as to where it is being held and in what room.

I used to attend meetings regularly. I'm still settling in to the whole
"baby's home" bit. I expect once RSV season is over we'll be heading out
a lot more. Right now, though, I'd be ditching the baby with my wife,
and I'm supposed to be doing the 6 and 9 feedings/changings.

Cheers,
Steven Black

I hadn't heard of doodle.com, but I'll take a look. A poll is definitely
the best way to find a good time. Thanks!

Re: [BLUG] reminder: meeting TONIGHT

I teach dog agility on Tuesdays, but I can shuffle that around some,
maybe just do an early class on BLUG nights and arrive fashionably
late. Y'all will be far to polite to comment on the fur and treat
crumbs and herding-dog spit on my clothing....

Barry, you could use a doodle.com poll to figure out the optimal meeting time.

FWIW, I used to attend meetings pretty regularly. Then, being around
so many students, I got inspired and started taking a few computer
classes at Ivy Tech. Which meant suddenly I was always busy, in class,
on Tuesday nights, and couldn't make meetings any more.
This semester, I'm only taking ONE class.
It meets Thursdays from 6-9.
Yeah, Linux Networking and Security. That class...

Wednesdays are good. Mondays are good until the weather is decent.

[BLUG] A Rails quasi-gig

Hi gang, I'm looking for someone who might interested in a
low-commitment involvement with an actual money-making bit of Ruby on
Rails programming I'm involved with. If that's of any interest to
you, read on...

One of my clients, for whom I've written a not-terribly-complex rails
app, is doing his annual audit and one of the things they always do is
disaster planning, so he wonders to whom he would turn if I died in a
plane crash. I think he's being a bit on the paranoid side, since
finding a rails programmer shouldn't be too difficult (as he himself
has confirmed). But, it probably makes it easy for him to say to his
board that he has a backup plan... and then he started thinking that
maybe when I'm too busy to do a task for him, we could see if the
backup person had time as well.

Familiarity with Rails is definitely desired, but if you've done
database/web development in other languages/frameworks and are
interested in Rails, I'm open to a discussion. you definitely do not
need to be a Rails guru. He'd prefer to work with someone local
and/or that we have reason to believe is a good person to work with.

Best of all, this actually pays! I suspect he's up for a couple few
hours of payment just to get familiar with the app, and if we start
sliding work your way, you get paid for any work you do on a
keep-track-of-your-hours-honestly basis. Probably around $40/hour, but
I can't commit to an exact amount at this time. Definitely nothing
near minimum wage, this is contract work! :)

If you or someone you know is interested, let me know. Thanks!

David

Re: [BLUG] The experience of Linux on Inauguration Day

My experience was that cnn.com/live on Firefox under Ubuntu worked
fabulously (I don't have a Facebook, so I didn't try logging into
that...), but on our Hasefroch boxes it complained that we needed the
latest version of Flash, on both Firefox and IE, even though adobe.com
informed us that we have exactly the version they suggested we needed
to install.

At the High School and Middle School, I was able to get a video signal
from cable to show in the auditoriums, but at our Lower School we
couldn't get a strong enough cable signal, so I was counting on
streaming cnn.com/live on a Hasefroch box (it worked yesterday...) and
was disappointed; they got to see CBS streamed live, instead.

Fun stuff.

Re: [BLUG] January meeting? February Meeting?

Fsck.
I just realized I dont have a library card. I can't reserve the room until tomorrow at the earliest. :( At least it's still open.

I'll try to make my presentation available to people who miss the meeting, but I'm not sure how I'll do that.

Thanks for doing that, Barry. I'll come if I can, I'm sure your talk
will be interesting. If you haven't already reserved the room, I
suggest getting it until 9:00. That first hour can go by quickly.

Additional thanks to whoever already updated the wiki!

Re: [BLUG] January meeting? February Meeting?

Looking at previous meetings, it seems Tuesdays have been the norm. The
20th is taken, but the 27th is free.

I'm going to reserve room 1A on Thursday the 29th 7:00-8:00pm. This is
your last chance to say something about it.

-Barry

PS. My apologies if this sends twice.

Re: [BLUG] open-source twitter workalike

I think it's great to see open source alternatives to these types of web apps.  Services like twitter and facebook are immensely popular but I don't always like to have these communication tools locked down in a proprietary system.  Of course the main problem with the alternatives is that if none of your friends use them you still end up on twitter and/or facebook to be able to communicate with them.

Depending on how you use it, it's a great communication tool. I don't
post what I'm eating for lunch or when I'm taking a poop, but I do try
to reply to people asking questions. You generally get out what you put in.

I mainly mentioned Identica because I heard a lot of people at the geek
dinner saying they use Twitter. I figured I should tell who I can about
open-source alternatives.

There are benefits of using something like Twitter?

I thought it simply existed to distract people from the fact that
they don't really have a life and that they're generally miserable.
Wait, it sounds like it is ideal for business purposes now that I
think about it...

[BLUG] open-source twitter workalike

Check out Identica. (http://identi.ca/)

The software (called Laconica) is open-source (AGPL) and you can
cross-subscribe to users on other instances of the same software. You
can also use XMPP (aka Jabber and Gtalk) to follow your subscriptions
and post to your feed, a service which Twitter discontinued a while ago.
Laconica also has a Twitter-compatible API, so you can use
Twitter-oriented applications on Identica with little modification.

The creator of Laconica also wrote up the Open Microblogging
specification, so you can write your own implementation in a different
language if you like. I know there's already one implementation using a
microsoft stack, but I haven't heard much about it. There are Laconica
installations at http://army.twit.tv/ and http://linuxoutlaws.net/. Fog
Creek uses Laconica internally because they want the benefits of Twitter
for business use without sending sensitive information out to a third
party.

So take a look at Identica and tell me what you think.

Re: [BLUG] January meeting? February Meeting? (Geek Dinner)

Max's Place looks good, and I haven't been there yet. I think this is a
great excuse to try a new pizza place, so I think I'll be there tonight.

Nope. Haven't touched Scratch yet, myself.

I only got into Alice because my boss is in his Java class while the
middle school teacher needed help with her programming unit.

I only decided to beat my head into the wall that is programming Alice
to play the Game of Life because of a comment on this list.

Tell you what: if I get into Scratch, I'll consider implementing the
Game of Life in it, if it seems like it'll be less painful that it has
been so far under Alice. ;-)

Heh. I suppose you are right there.

Most god modes mark you down as cheating and prevent your highscore from
showing up, though...

Sounds like trouble.

When I see you type "basic introduction" my brain thinks, "grade
schoolers". Perhaps I have higher expectations from grade schoolers,
though.

I mean, it is basically a glorified Logo, except without a turtle it has
a 3D world-thing.

Well, I'm talking super-smart 5 or 6 year old kids. A kid that, perhaps
with a little help at first, thinks it would be fun.

I'm okay with it being something I have to actively help with when
she's that young. With any luck it'll get her interest up, and that's
important early on. With sufficient interest, then they try to do
stuff on their own, and that's where the real progress happens.

Yeah, I hear you there. Have I mentioned that "Unconditional Parenting"
book by Alfie Kohn? (It is great.) Yeah, there's no way I'm forcing her
to do anything she doesn't want to do. I'm not even going to try to use
rewards/praise to try to get her to do it.

I want her to honestly enjoy it. You don't instill enjoyment in a task
with rewards or praise. (You may instill *obligation* that way, but not
enjoyment.)

Interesting. Well, one or the other should be good for Rosalie.

We'll see which one seems most interesting to her first.

By the way, have you done Conway's Game of Life in Scratch? ;)

Who needs the ability to change things outside the game when you can
do it in real-time while you're playing? ;-)

Now, Re: Alice.

The more I've gotten into Alice, the more frustrating it has been for me.

It was fun while I was just working on presenting a scene from Alice's
Adventures in Wonderland; they have 3-d models for all the characters,
and the language is named after the story (the red queen glares at you
angrily when the program hits a bug, f'r'instance), so I figured it'd
be both easy(ish) and appropriate. I'm still not done with that,
little tweaks here and there, but I decided to run Alice through some
more CSy paces.

However, I've found it not worthwhile for anything non-trivial. I've
*YET* to get Conway's Game of Life working, and I'm certain that it is
Alice's failure and not my own (I've proven it; in one method getting
the "i"th item out of a list of booleans comes out "true" or "false",
in the method I originally wrote, it always comes out "None").

I will beat my head on this until I get it to work or until I get to
the point where I know nothing else to try, though, since I *am*
rather pig-headed.

For one thing the interface is incredibly clunky; I needed 100
penguins for a 10x10 Game of Life, but I couldn't instantiate 100
penguins by declaring an array of 100 penguin class objects; I had to
manually drag and drop 100 Penguin objects into the world (each of
which has it's own, independent class from the other 99 penguins), and
then MANUALLY put them each, one by one, into a list variable so I
could programatically move them to their starting positions when I
click "Play".

Also it's got all kinds of bugs and quirks (different ones between
Windows and Linux, though some are the same), and CMU hasn't patched
the official version (2.0) since April of 2005.

It's ostensibly open source (that is, you can get the source code; the
other resources are copyrighted, I believe), but they don't accept
anyone else's input.

There *is* a 2.2 beta but they don't encourage it's use, and there
*is* a 3.0 being worked on, but I have a hard time believing 3.0 will
be any more open, since they're heavily depending on intellectual
property from EA's "The Sims 2".

All in all, so far I feel like "Wow, this *could be* really cool if it
had an open community behind it, but I guess it's okay enough for
Middle Schoolers making 3-d cartoons, as it is."

I understand it's aimed at college level CS courses, but I can't
really imagine it being appropriate for any but the most basic
introduction, as it is.

> Yeah, the rest of the world thinks of using it no earlier than middle
> school. I think, "Hey, that may be an introduction suitable to age 5 or
> 6."

Totally. 8th graders jump in with absolutely no problem. I don't know
about *ANY* 5 or 6 year old, but I would have had a blast with this
when I was 6.

> After all, I was already planning to teach her Python at age 8. If this
> one is supposed to be easier to use, then it logically would be suitable
> for earlier ages...

*I THINK* it would be suitable for earlier ages (5ish) if: the person
teaching it understands it and knows the learner well enough to
explain it for them, and the kid learning already has a firm grasp of
using a mouse with a GUI and a healthy curiosity. Key here is: IF the
kid is interested.

We use Scratch in our Lower School programming classes, FWIW; it's got
a similar drag-and-drop interface, but it's based on Squeak and
interacts primarily with 2-D graphics (but it can also be used to
program Lego robots...).

You know, if you folks are looking for some wholesome geeky fun, you
should check out the Geek Dinner happening tomorrow night at Max's

They are good events for just hanging out and meeting people.

Re: [BLUG] January meeting? February Meeting?

Hey folks,

Sorry I haven't commented on this previously. December and January have
really kicked my butt, and I don't know if I'm gonna be able to make it
for a meeting this week (for example, Monday Tuesday and Wednesday this
week will all start at 8am and end at 10pm).

Given that, I haven't scheduled the meetings. So, maybe it's a New Year
and time for a new paradigm. Is anybody willing to help out and
guarantee that they'll come to a given meeting? I'm not saying I can
never do it, and I'm happy to work on the scheduling and the Wiki, but
my obligations have recently increased to the point where I don't feel
like I can consistently be able to put something together each month.

I'll call the Library today and see if I can get a room reserved for
this Thursday. I'm super-excited to see that we have two presentations
lined up for the coming months (Barry in January, Paul for February).

Again, if anybody is willing to assist with meetings this year, I'd
appreciate it. Feel free to email me off-list, preferably at
drcooley@indiana.edu.

Cheers,
Cooley

Re: [BLUG] January meeting? February Meeting?

The library is easy to reserve, we just need to do it on time.
Preferably as early as possible.

http://www.monroe.lib.in.us/general_info/meeting_rooms.html

If you do it early enough, it gets added to the proper lists of Library
activities. Otherwise (IIRC) they'll just end up writing something on
the paper for the door.

Steven Black
