Re: [BLUG] Asterisk/VoIP presentation

Something to check out that I found out about. The FWDout project is
similar to what you were suggesting. But the liability is huge. Now
that I think about it, I wouldn't want to allow anyone to make random
calls from my phone. If they harrass someone, I'd be responsible and it
would probably be difficult to track them down.

yes and also calling locally to initiate an SIP call

For me personally (although I dont have a cellphone either) SBC requires
you to have plain telephone service in order to provide DSL service, and
it's been working well so I dont want to switch to cable. Some other
reasons I've seen: home security systems that use a modem, and the fact
that cellphones are not reliable in an emergency.

Well, I hope you don't mean call your house and then make a long
distance call using your phone line so that you pay the toll. I'll
explain how to configure a dialplan to avoid that and that's probably
the first thing everyone needs to learn before running an Asterisk
server. But I think you mean making a SIP connection from another city
to your asterisk server and then to eliminate the toll there. Both are
possible and I'll explain how all that works at the presentation.

I'm curious about this. Why would you need to have a landline? Do
certain businesses require it now or something? Back in 1999, I moved
into an apartment and tried going without a landline and just using my
cellphone and wireless internet. I don't remember running into any
trouble like needing a landline.

That's an interesting idea. One thing that you can do (but I haven't
done yet) is connect Asterisk servers together using the IAX protocol.
Its usually used for redundancy in the same office, but I wonder if its
possible to pool POTS lines together from different locations
transparently. I guess you could theoretically make your own PSTN,
which is basically what the phone companies connect to each other over.
But you'd have to be willing to give up use of your phone line and some
internet bandwidth.

> i'm sure there are a couple terms of service being violated somewhere.

I don't think so, but it depends on the phone company I guess.

the idea was to plug the phone line into a modem card and route the audio
through an SIP call, thus allowing anyone to call our house and use the
free long distance.

lots of people have cellphones but for some reason or another are required
to have a land line, which then goes unused. this unused telephone
infrastructure could be put to work as a community resource to provide an
'internet phone gateway' for local POTS telephones, or in reverse to allow
skype/SIP calls to local phones. the software to do this could be
distributed for free on a custom linux live-CD, only requirements being an
internet connection and an unused computer with a modem.

combine this with an ad-hoc rooftop mesh wifi net and you have ...
something. info-anarchy!

i'm sure there are a couple terms of service being violated somewhere.

Great. I can definately show how that's done. What do you mean
however by a SIP-to-POTS bridge? Do you mean using an FXO/FXS card to
hook up an Asterisk server to a POTS line or do you mean something more
specific?

i was interested in asterisk for making an answering machine that would
record to sound files in your home folder, but the configuration docs
always made my eyes glaze over.. also wanted to try a SIP-to-POTS bridge.

so, i'll try to be there.

That sounds like a great idea, Mark. I think the June meeting will be
an informal get-together at a restaurant anyway, so July sounds perfect.

I've done some work with Asterisk too (though just as a SIP-phone VOIP
system, not connected to POTS) and I find it very, very interesting.

I'm putting together a presentation on Zimbra, myself. Probably do that
at the end of the summer.

[BLUG] Asterisk/VoIP presentation

I'd be interested in doing a presentation on the Asterisk open source
PBX server. Is July open? June is a little too soon for me. I don't
want to bother with it if nobody is interested though, so if you could
let me know if you are interested in such a presentation, let me know.

I promise to make it interesting and somewhat interactive. I've
learned quite a bit about Asterisk over the past few weeks while setting
up a new VoIP phone system for Suso's offices. Provided that the
library allows it, I should be able to bring an IP phone to the
presentation and make calls through the internet to the Asterisk server
in our office and stuff like that. I think it will even be interesting
to those who don't know anything about VoIP.

I will be a Nick's wih a maroon and cream hoosier jacket (I know, I know, too much bling...what is wrong with red and white :)  I will check back at about 7 or so.

I reserved room 1B at the MoCo Library (and I can bring a projector, no
problem). Come to think of it, I haven't received conformation from
them. I'll check tomorrow.

Hey, thanks for the link.

I've started playing around with Mnemosyne to beat some simple facts
into my head.

So far so good. I've knocked some cobwebs out surrounding my Japanese
reading skills, and reinforced my knowledge of where all the U.S. States
are.

Was curious if anyone had tried out powertop on a laptop and if you had seen
any improvements in battery life?

Yes! I have been using powertop since quite a bit now. My machine is a Dell
Vostro 1400 running Hardy and it does seem to make a certain difference in
the battery life.
I have the powertop recommendations in a startup script which is rather
nifty than executing them each time by running PowerTop.

If you have a Nvidia card (which takes a significant share for
processor-wakeups) you could also take a look at these tips -

All-

Sorry for the late notice on this, I've had trouble (probably because of
my newbosity) getting the Library to confirm that I actually have the
meeting room reserved.

Anyway, we have (I think) meeting room 1B at the Monroe County Public
Library reserved for this coming Tuesday (May 13) at 7:00pm. I believe
we're scheduled to hear a presentation on some music software (I can't
remember the name, it's been a long weekend) from Bob Piercy (Bob- I'll
bring a projector, if you need one).

I'll also plan to (informally) discuss Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)
with any and all interested. Bring your issues, maybe somebody will be
able to help!

Next month (June) we'll hold another informal meet-n-greet at a local
restaurant.

Have a happy Monday, and I'll hope to see you Tuesday evening.

I very much wanted to attend this meeting as the topic is of

of them). It doesn't look like, however, I'll be able to attend
(again!). I wonder if it would be possible to get this taped so that it can
be viewed later? Or a screencast with some sort of voice over? I
realize this might be too much of a pain, and that's okay. But I figured
I'd ask.
Have fun at the meeting - sounds like it's going to be a real cool one!

I've heard that some of the places that have podcasted meetings apparently
suffered from it. Once the meetings would be online, attendance dropped
steadily. Then, once attendance got low enough the presentations themselves
grew steadily poorer until it all just, well, sucked.

I like the idea of the podcast. It would allow regular attendees lookup old questions, and cautious geeks feel out the club. It would also allow those of us that can't attend a chance to learn from the group.

The podcast could be delayed until a week before the next meeting. This way the information is still be available, but it would seem like an archive instead of a replacement. (Imagine the delay between Movie theater release and DVD release.) It's appearance would also act as a reminder that a meeting is just a week away.

It would also be nice to see meeting notes. That way those out of attendance could see what we are missing. Those in attendance could get links, config files, and all the trivial details that end up being critical.

Have fun at the meeting - sounds like it's going to be a real cool one!

[BLUG] BLUG Meeting, Tues May 13

Cooley

Re: [BLUG] powertop

Yes! I have been using powertop since quite a bit now. My machine is a Dell Vostro 1400 running Hardy and it does seem to make a certain difference in the battery life.
I have the powertop recommendations in a startup script which is rather nifty than executing them each time by running PowerTop.

If you have a Nvidia card (which takes a significant share for processor-wakeups) you could also take a look at these tips -

Cheers,

[BLUG] powertop

Was curious if anyone had tried out powertop on a laptop and if you had seen
any improvements in battery life?

Re: [BLUG] Supermemo

Hey, thanks for the link.

I've started playing around with Mnemosyne to beat some simple facts
into my head.

So far so good. I've knocked some cobwebs out surrounding my Japanese
reading skills, and reinforced my knowledge of where all the U.S. States
are.
