Re: [BLUG] DVD

Hmm... this is strange. We have been using maplyer and xine for years.
We built RPM of our own at first. Now we use the RPM from rpmforge.
Worked pretty well either way.

[BLUG] DVD

I recently bought a Dell with Ubuntu on it, and I tried to watch a DVD, only to find that no matter what player or DVD I tried, I couldn't get any sound.  The sound from other sources (internet, mp3s, etc.) worked.  The default DVD program is LinDVD.

Security does have a long way to come. You are talking about the time
that ssh did not even exist and everybody used rsh/rcp and use 'xhost

Heh, I don't need to imagine that. The orchard cluster in Lindley Hall
was great for that in the 90's. It was also fun to run "xv -root" and
put up inappropriate pictures as the root of their desktop, run many
copy of xeyes all over the screen, and fork bomb them when some noob was

Some devices are set to be 'owned' by the current console user.
Examples are sound device, video, keyboard, mouse, and CD/DVD driver,
etc. Of course there is a way to change it. Imagine that somebody ssh
into your workstation and start playing music on your sound card?

I'm on Fedora 9, running Amarok through PulseAudio. Amarok kept
running, but it muted its audio stream while I'm using the other user's
desktop. Which is kind of what you want anyway...

I don't think anything "big" happens to processes during fast user
switch. It looks like a new X server (on console 10, as display :1) is
started and processes using "console devices" such as Amarok are
disconnected from the actual output...i.e. Amarok got quiet but
continued to feed data to PulseAudio.

In his case, yeah, that's a good idea. I just didn't see the reason for
why the processes would need to stop if you didn't log out. Or just use
nohup if you _do_ need to log out :)

What program was the audio coming from?

Sound and desktops are kinda special. I was able to play sound from
the console and have it overlap with sound from X windows, but when I
tried to start a second gnome session it halted the sound from the
first one.

You can disregard my previous message.

I've had my head in PuTTY all day, so I was thinking of what would
happen to a job in an interrupted ssh session. My first thought was
running a job in screen and forgetting to detach. I wanted to get more
specifics before trying to help.

The difference between theory and practice? In theory, there is no
difference, but in practice there is.

I did a fast user switch from gnome and while my audio did stop, all of
the other processes running doing network things continued as normal.

Why would normal processes stop "in theory" when switching users?
That's what a multiuser system is for :)
