[BLUG] Any ideas as to another place for meetings?

Does anyone know of a good place to meet with the following ammenities?

* Open til 10pm or later. (or perhaps its just ok to stay til that time)
* Can hold 20+ people comfortably.
* Located in Bloomington
* Internet access (preferably a wall jack and wireless because some
people bring in their desktop computers)
* Would be nice if it had a projector screen, but not absolutely necessary.

I know there are a lot of meeting places at IU like this, but I'm not
affiliated with IU anymore so there would need to be someone dedicated
to reserving the rooms. Also, what would that mean for internet access
if you aren't a student?

Any suggestions are welcome.

[BLUG] Time for a discussion on time

I'm sorry but I have a problem with this:

date +"date: %Y %m %d, Standard week number: %W of %Y, ISO week number %V of %G"
date: 2007 12 31, Standard week number: 53 of 2007, ISO week number 01 of 2008

IMHO, week numbers should only refer to the current year because
that's really the only place they are useful, in dividing up the year.
Obviously in human terms, this week is made up of two different years,
but in computer terms, that is too confusing. If I run a command that
returns 200801, that tells me that its already 2008, but its not.

Thoughts?

[BLUG] video on new network model

Linux-friendly scientist and contributor to tcpdump and traceroute tools
gives a talk at Google, "A New Way to Look at Networking."
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6972678839686672840&q=engedu

Some ideas presented in the talk about his new network model:
* data-oriented "dissemination" network instead of node-oriented internet
* every chunk of data on the network is associated with a name, not an
IP address (the data matters, not the supplier)
* data is decentralized and ubiquitous; data doesn't live at one
specific location
* literally anything that can move bits can be a part of the network
* no more network congestion
* security, trust and integrity are derived from the data itself, not
from where it supposedly originated or the channel it arrived on
* eliminating phishing, pharming and spam would be trivial
* SSL would become irrelevant
* finer grained control over traffic, including a way to prioritize
incoming traffic - example: email and gaming traffic in one household
can be arranged so that email always gets delivered first before any
gaming traffic starts or continues. currently there's no way to do this.
* today's protocols are designed for a point-to-point conversation
between two applications on two machines. instead, the new network
should distribute data much like a radio tower would broadcast radio
signals ((multi)point-to-multipoint); instead of many copies of the same
data going to recipients one at a time, a single copy goes to every
recipient simultaneously.

[BLUG] January meeting (Blender)

I'll be doing the January presentation on Blender, the popular 3d
modeling, rendering and animation tool (http://www.blender.org/). I
think I could do a pretty good job on it because rendered 3d graphics is
one of my long time major interests in computers.

I'd like to do it on a different day and possibily in a different
venue. The normal 7-9pm BLUG time doesn't lend itself to having a lot
of time to setup and tear down and take questions so we need a venue
where we can be there from like 7-11 or midnight even. I don't intend
to take up that much time, but it would be nice to have it in case.

Does anyone know of another place where we could meet? Maybe we could
just meet on a Saturday afternoon in the library and that would give us
more time, but I'm not sure how well a time like that works for you and
the natural light outside would make the projection a little washed out.

Thank you very much Scott for taking over for BLUG over the past year.
Many of us appretiate it and wish you well in Texas. I wanted to
schedule a night for us to all go out to Nick's or something to see
Scott off right. I know you are pretty busy Scott so its up to you.

Joe, aren't they looking to get rid of the messaging team? I'm not
sure why they would need to replace you. How many others are on the
team right now?

I'm somewhat interested because the messaging team is where my mentors
at Kiva came from. But its also kinda strange timing and I doubt I'd be
there for long if I signed on. If you could give me more information
about what the climate is like there after Brian Wheeler become VP, that

[BLUG] Announcement

Dear fellow Linux geeks,
My wife and I are moving back to Texas around Jan 1st due to her
health. I won't be complaining about the warmer weather though. Mark
Krenz has agreed to take over the role of President for the time being
until a more permanent President/Dictator can be found.

I would like to thank everyone for the great time I have had being
involved in BLUG. While I will still be on the mailing lists, I will
miss seeing everyone in person at the various events. My hope is to
take some of the energy and ideas that I have gotten from BLUG members
and use it to help grow the West Texas LUG in Abilene.

Now, a round of applause for your new President Mark Krenz. <cue cheesy
hail to the chief music>

Thank you,
Scott Blaydes

[BLUG] Looking to hire Unix admins

Hello,

The group where I'm working in currently at IU is looking for two new
mail admins:

http://www.indiana.edu/~uitshr/services/jobs/PrinSoft_Messaging_13648_internal.html
http://www.indiana.edu/~uitshr/services/jobs/Messaging_4981.html

(the first job posting is internal to IU only)

There is much that can be said about the job, but in short we are at
the top of the Unix geek totem pole here, and the pay here is just
about as high as you'll get at an IU job doing technical stuff. That
being said, don't let this scare you off from applying. It is very
rare that we find a candidate that is a just-add-water solution that
perfectly fits these requirements, so please apply apply apply!

Please let me know if you have any questions I can answer, I'd prefer
to do so privately :)

Re: [BLUG] OLPC

The one from Red Hat hasn't been updates in over 6 months.

A much more up-to-date one is available. There is an Xubuntu based one
that works on all the hardware we've tested it on
<http://startx.ro/sugar/> (which is neat because if you log out of the
X session they log you into by default, you change the session and log
directly into Sugar, otherwise you can run the emulator from the
Applications menu from within XFCE).

And there's a more recent one, based directly on the Red Hat builds it
seems, which we HAVEN'T gotten to work on the hardware we've tested it
on. It might work for you, though:
<ftp://rohrmoser-engineering.de/pub/XO-LiveCD/>

Hope you have an awesome day!

RE: [BLUG] Fwd: December IUMMUG Meeting: Unix for web developers

Joe, do you know if this will be recorded? I'd like to watch, but I'm in a meeting at that time.

By the way, nice talk on IPv6 the other day.

Thanks, Weldon

Hey Guys,

I'm conducting a little seminar for web developers about Unix basics - sort of a "get inside the brain of a Unix sysadmin" targeted for web developers - many of which will likely be novices...

If any of you are interested in coming, the details are below. It's free...
