Re: [BLUG] insight broadband vs. flets

I agree, try downloading a linux iso of some sort from a major mirror
and see what you get. If you're really getting 50Mbit/s, you should
be able to download a ~600M iso in under three minutes. If you can do
that, color me impressed. But, my gut feeling is as Mark seems to be
suggesting, that it won't be anywhere near that. And I agree with
Matt, if it's just 50Mbit to the ISP but then you slow down after
that, well, that's not super useful is it.

As for Scott's old man grumbling, I've been musing recently
(including here:
http://davidernst.net/blog/2006/05/21/net-neutrality-is-a-deep-issue/
) That once we reach an actual usable home bandwidth that equals the
bitrate of a DVD being played -- 11.08 Mbit/s, according to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-Video -- then I cannot currently
imagine what will drive masses of consumers to demand more bandwidth
at that point. Sure, people on this list would love to be able to
download ISOs faster, but there aren't enough of us to make that much
of a difference, and besides, I personally wouldn't pay any extra to
be able to download a full CD-ROM in 3 minutes (as per above) vs. 15
minutes (as would be at DVD rate). And, the vast majority of users
will be so thrilled that they can talk on Skype in DVD quality that
they'll just take whatever's cheapest and not pay more for more
bandwidth.

Of course, we've got a long way to go in the US before we reach that
point, but I predict a plateau. Maybe software bloat will surprise
me, and maybe some virtual reality thing will actually catch on, I'm
not saying "no one will ever need more than that", but I do predict
lots of bandwidth demand until we can all do DVD quality streaming,
and then a plateau. For whatever my predictions are worth. :)

Re: [BLUG] insight broadband vs. flets

And what is the point, you can only look at porn so fast.

Lets think of the other side of it, how fast can that zombied windows
box now send out spam? How fast can it scan for other unpatched system?
Does anyone really need to be able to "first post" on Slashdot that
quickly? Can Digg users bring up the same dupes even faster? Do you
really want to answer that video phone call while sitting in your
underwear at home in front of the computer? Put some pants on and brush
off the Cheeto dust.

Innovation is a great thing, but I hold some fondness for the internet
before it was easier to get on. You know, before it became a Mall.

Re: [BLUG] insight broadband vs. flets

100M fiber to what?  The local ISP's lan where they have a DS3 (or whatever Japan has) connected to a peering point?  You can have a 1000M network in your local lan but that doesn't mean you got 1000M link to the backbone.

It reminds me of buying car speakers.  A true 250W amp in your car might leave you def.. Your not getting what you pay for.

Depends on whether i get a projector or not. I planning on looking at 2
commercial routing solutions, ImageStream routers and Mikrotik software
and hardware.

Thank you,

Wiki hasn't been updated and I may have missed an earlier posting, but
what's the meeting about this time?

Re: [BLUG] insight broadband vs. flets

I'm curious, are you actually getting the advertised speeds? What
would be a good way to test? I would only consider it to be what they
are advertising if you could download from a single site at a rate of
about 5 to 6 megabytes per second (for the 50Mbit connection).

Probably downloading an iso from one of the large mirrors would do the
trick.

Re: [BLUG] insight broadband vs. flets

yep your right some of the speeds isp's offer are ridicuolos but on the other hand which is easier to cover the entire us with high speed or the entirety of japan.

Re: [BLUG] Gaming Night Suggestion

Well, what's keeping me from playing is not the choice of games
(though, admittedly, having to run out and buy NWN was a factor in my
not showing up this past weekend), but of life circumstances.

This coming weekend, for instance, I'll be in Bloomington packing more
stuff to bring to my new apartment. Add to that the fact that I have
very little social life up here as of yet so I'll likely be calling up
friends to do some socializing if I get a free moment while I'm down
there, and chances I'll have the time to sit and rock the BZFlag on
Saturday at 9 fall slightly.

Ok, if all of you are going to play then I'll put it on the schedule.
I'll knock off one of the ut2004 sessions. There need to be more weeks
in a month. ;-)

I'll be sending out a survey this week to try to collect everyone's
opinions about what games to play, when to play them and how you
generally feel about these gaming sessions.
